Post Covid syndrome: treatment of long Covid
As part of a medical study on the treatment of post Covid syndrome with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, we treated several patients with post Covid syndrome in our former practice in Munich and the Instituto Dr. Scheib on Mallorca. The study has now been completed. Three out of four participants had a complete remission or a dramatic improvement in symptoms and full recovery of their ability to work after a total of 6 ketamine infusions and 20 stimulations with rTMS.
What is post Covid syndrome?
Symptoms
Typical symptoms of post Covid syndrome are
- Memory and concentration problems
- Extreme exhaustion, similar to the flu
- Sleep disturbances, non-restorative sleep, nocturnal leg movements and twitching
- Exertion aggravates the symptoms for more than 24 hours
- Muscle and joint pain without redness and swelling
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Sensitive lymph nodes on the neck/under the armpits
- Depressive moods
- Fever
- Visual disturbances
- Pronounced exhaustion, tiredness and reduced resilience
Similar symptoms, also known as chronic fatigue, also occur in other diseases such as multiple sclerosis, cancer, fibromyalgia or certain viral infections.
Study objective Long Covid treatment Dr. Scheib
Our study was designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of post-Covid syndrome. The study investigated the treatment of post-Covid syndrome using the gentle and targeted method of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), in which the brain region responsible for fatigue is specifically stimulated with magnetic stimulation.
At our clinic in Mallorca, we are already successfully treating various conditions such as depression and other neurological and mental illnesses with rTMS and have had positive experiences with this form of treatment. The rTMS treatments are carried out by specialist staff and under the supervision of medical specialists. rTMS treatment is safe and painless.
What is fatigue syndrome?
Fatigue syndrome, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is now considered a neurological disease in its own right. CFS is relatively certain if more than four of the symptoms listed below persist for more than six months and other causes have been ruled out.
Typical symptoms of fatigue syndrome are
- Memory and concentration problems
- Extreme exhaustion, similar to the flu
- Sleep disturbances, non-restorative sleep, nocturnal leg movements and twitching
- Exertion aggravates the symptoms for more than 24 hours
- Muscle and joint pain without redness and swelling
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Sensitive lymph nodes on the neck/under the armpits
- Depressive moods
- Fever
- Visual disturbances
Definition of Chronic Fatigue
CFS differs from other fatigue conditions primarily in that physical exertion usually exacerbates the condition for more than 24 hours and sometimes results in flu-like symptoms.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) proposes a definition of chronic fatigue syndrome that is limited to the main symptoms of the disease:
According to the IOM, three of the following symptoms must be persistently present for a diagnosis to be made:
- A new substantial restriction of professional, educational, social or personal activities that has persisted for more than six months and is accompanied by fatigue.
- Fatigue after physical exertion
- non-restorative sleep
In addition, at least one of the following two symptoms must be present:
- cognitive impairments (e.g. disorders of memory, attention and information processing [slowing down])
- Orthostatic intolerance
