The progressive relaxation according to Jacobson is a muscle relaxation method, in which by consciously tensing and relaxing specific muscle groups a state of deep relaxation of the whole body is achieved. The LCD toggles the individual muscles are first tensed, the muscle tension is kept a short amount of time, then the tension is released. The focus is on the change between tension and relaxation, and the feelings that go along with these different states.

The aim of the procedure is to reduce the muscle tension below the normal level due to an improved body awareness.

The progressive relaxation is easier to learn than autogenic training and is very often used in treatment of pain.
