Treatment of eating disorders is usually carried out in special clinics for eating disorders. Many patients do benefit from this. However, some patients also heat each other up and learn how to lose weight even better from each other. These patients are more likely to benefit from the individual therapy that we offer. An occasional or forced treatment does not improve the prognosis.

In the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, which occurs particularly in adolescence in girls, food intake is controlled. The patients usually try to achieve an ever lower weight. The menstrual period stops and sometimes life-threatening underweight is reached. There is often an overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, depression, and personality disorders. The mortality rate is almost 20 percent.

In the eating disorder bulimia nervosa , bouts of eating alternate with vomiting. The weight can be normal, increased or decreased. The frequent vomiting causes changes in the tooth enamel; the dentist is often the first to recognize the clinical picture. The electrolyte derailments that occur during vomiting can lead to life-threatening rhythmic disorders.

There are mixed forms and transitions between anorexia and bulimia. Meanwhile, there are also increasing numbers of male patients.

In the treatment of eating disorders, a good and sustainable therapeutic relationship is important. Intensive psychotherapy, which also requires family involvement, especially in younger patients, often shows success. Recent studies also show the effectiveness of tDCS, rTMS, neurofeedback and ketamine infusions in conjunction with zinc. These procedures should always be done in combination with psychotherapy and / or hypnosis.

A combined approach with psychotherapy and supportive procedures also helps with binge eating and orthorexi .
