During neurofeedback different brainwaves are trained through operant conditioning and changed until the patient’s symptoms diminish. The starting point here is that certain psychological discomfort with different brainwaves in the EEG (brain patterns) can be seen.
Certain syndromes show typical EEG changes, which are then used as the base for an exercise program. The patient sees an animation on the monitor that shows his brain activity. A change in the brainwaves gives feed back as successfully carried-out animation and vice versa. This way the patient learns to influence his own brain activity positively. This process is observed continuously and the program is modified depending on the change in symptoms.
The first effects become noticeable after about 8 to 10 sessions. Disorders, such as sleep disorders, can be treated completely within 10-15 sessions. Neurofeedback treatment can also be used for depression and other disorders or conditions such as ADHD or addiction, often more sessions are required, depending on the severity of the condition. Also, often this treatment is used in combination with other therapies, like Ketamine infusions and psychotherapy.
