Intensive psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy in Mallorca and in Sotogrande
„Meaningful therapy must be based on the needs of the patient, not the other way round“
– Dr. med. Mario Scheib
Specialist for psychosomatic Medicine
Treatment of depression, addiction, anxiety & psychosomatic diseases with ketamine
With our team of international medical specialists, clinical psychologists, sports and physical therapists, we offer customized, intensive and brief treatments with lasting effect for depression, trauma (PTSD), addiction, burnout, anxiety, long covid and other psychosomatic illnesses.
We work with a combination of evidence-based, modern therapeutic methods. We use pharmacotherapy (ketamine infusion therapy, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy), brain stimulation techniques (rTMS, neurofeedback), relaxation techniques (biofeedback, hypnosis), and intensive psychotherapy (e.g., virtual reality behavioral therapy, EMDR, psychodynamic therapy).
Absolute discretion and average treatment duration of about 2.5 weeks.

Innovative therapy concept
The therapy concept of individualized and intensive multimodal therapy was first implemented in this form by Dr. Mario Scheib in Mallorca in 2006 and is practiced at all our locations.
It starts with a comprehensive psychological and neurological diagnosis. It includes psychological tests, measurement of heart rate variance (an expression of stress levels) and a quantitative EEG (showing the activity of the various brain areas and their communication with each other), as well as a sleep lab if needed.
The core modules of our therapy are combined and applied depending on the disease and the specific needs of the patient according to an individually composed treatment plan:
Ketamine
Infusion therapy
Ketamine usually results in immediate improvement of depressive symptoms and pain. Suicidal thoughts usually disappear immediately. It also improves neuroplasticity, which improves the brain's ability to learn. Psychotherapy and neuromodulation procedures have a faster and more lasting effect. Each infusion lasts about 40 minutes and is attended by a therapist. Ketamine is a safe drug that has been approved since the early 1970s and has almost no side effects with the method we use. Our patients usually receive 4 to 6 infusions during a two-week treatment.
Transcranial
magnetic stimulation
Treatment with rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) is a non-invasive procedure in which strong, pulsed magnetic waves stimulate specific parts of the brain. Depending on the frequency and range of stimulation, this has antidepressant, pain-relieving and anxiety-relieving effects. RTMS for depression and addiction disorders has been used very successfully for some time. RTMS can also be used successfully in the treatment of tinnitus, burnout and anxiety. The procedure is safe and, apart from occasional mild headaches, has no side effects. Depending on the clinical picture, patients are stimulated up to four times a day for 5 to 20 minutes.
Neurofeedback
therapy
Neurofeedback uses operant conditioning to train and change deviant brain waves until the patient's symptoms are reduced. Based on the measurements of the quantitative EEG, individual training programs can be created in which the patient controls animations on a screen with his thoughts and thereby trains certain brain functions. Neurofeedback has proven particularly effective for ADHD and sleep disorders.
Ketamine assisted
psychotherapy
Ketamine improves neuroplasticity, the brain becomes more efficient, new neuronal connections can be formed. This allows psychotherapy to work more efficiently and quickly. Different methods are used depending on the patient's clinical picture and situation. Psychodynamic psychotherapy uncovers unconscious conflicts and helps to work through them. Behavioral therapy teaches new behaviors, sometimes through virtual reality or hypnosis, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works through traumatic events. Our patients usually have two hours of psychotherapy per day in individual treatment.
HRV
Biofeedback
With chronic stress, heart disease and depression, the heart's ability to control the heart is reduced. Through HRV biofeedback training, the flexibility of the heart's action can be expanded again, leading to greater inner calm and resistance to stress. Through biofeedback, the patient can see or hear changes in his state of tension. He learns to influence them consciously.
Sports and
exercise therapy
Physical activity has antidepressant and anxiety-reducing effects. Each patient is accompanied by a sports therapist or personal trainer, who also helps to develop new healthy habits.

Continue reading →Dr. Scheib is an internationally renowned expert in ketamine therapy for depression. His team consists of experienced therapists who successfully treat various psychosomatic illnesses with combined ketamine therapy. Our therapy results are scientifically evaluated continuously.
About 8 to 9% of all people suffer from depressive disorders that require treatment. About one in five people develop depression in the course of their lives. Depression reduces the quality of life, increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and some forms of cancer. The common antidepressant drugs often do not work, but lead to considerable side effects such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction. It is now thought that only about 15% of patients benefit from current antidepressants.
We usually treat depression with ketamine infusion therapy, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and intensive psychotherapy.
Almost 90% of our patients are significantly improved after less than two weeks of treatment.
Burnout syndrom is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. It affects especially dedicated health care professionals, social workers, teachers and other professionals with stressful jobs and emotional contact to their clients. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of burnout among health care professionals in the USA was reported to be 40 to 70%, among surgeons in Kuwait even 77%. Symptoms range from sleep disturbances to depressive moods, increased irritability, social withdrawal, immune system disorders, substance abuse and increased suicide risk.
In addition to treatment with ketamine, rTMS, neurofeedback and HRV biofeedback, we offer intensive psychotherapy and coaching. Sports therapy complements the programme. We recommend a time-out of at least three weeks for severe burnout.
About 12% of all people suffer from anxiety disorders that require treatment. These include generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and phobias. Anxiety often reduces personal space and limits life. Some people self-medicate with alcohol or other substances or are treated with benzodiazepines by their doctor. This often results in additional problems.
We usually treat anxiety behaviorally or hypnotherapeutically. For phobias, we also do exposure training in virtual reality. Neurofeedback, rTMS and HRV biofeedback may be added, also ketamine infusion therapy.
Depending on the type of anxiety disorder and how long it has been chronic, significant improvements are possible after just a few days.
Substance abuse disorder consists of the abuse of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine and other substances. Addiction often develops on the basis of depression, an anxiety disorder or severe trauma. However, if damage or dependence has already developed, we have an additional, independent clinical picture which requires special treatment. In the past, the goal of treatment was always complete abstinence. Today we know that other therapy goals are also possible; we always decide this in dialogue with our patients.
Depending on the type and severity of the addiction, we use ketamine to overwrite the addiction memory. Many patients no longer feel the need to use alcohol or cocaine after just a few infusions. In addition, we carry out rTMS and intensive psychotherapy. And of course we also treat the underlying disorder. Further treatment may also involve medication to reduce the urge to use.
Covid19 infections, even if they are relatively mild, entail a risk of long-lasting post-covid syndrome, which can manifest itself in reduced resilience, rapid fatigue and impairment of memory. This chronic fatigue syndrome, which can also occur after other viral infections, is probably related to inflammation in the central nervous system. The exact mechanism is not yet fully understood.
Ketamine infusions counteract these inflammatory processes and, in some patients, allow the old strength and vital energy to return after a short time. RTMS also helps to improve cognitive functions. In a pilot study, we were able to show that a large proportion of patients benefit from this treatment and are able to return to work after just two weeks.
In obsessive-compulsive disorders, compulsive thoughts and actions severely restrict the lives of those affected. Obsessive-compulsive disorders can be treated both psychotherapeutically and pharmacologically. Behavioral therapy, depth psychology-based psychotherapy and hypnosis, as well as neurofeedback are used. Pharmacologically, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (anti-depression and anti-anxiety agents) can be used. Ketamine infusions in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder result in a marked decrease or disappearance of symptoms in most people, sometimes for several weeks after a single infusion. This time can then be used for intensive psychotherapy, often making permanent pharmacological therapy avoidable.
Different causes can lead to chronic pain: Accidents, operations, but also tension in the muscles caused by stress or spasms in the blood vessels. Sometimes the cause of the pain has already been eliminated, but the pain has left traces in our pain memory. Chronic pain often occurs in conjunction with depression. Long-term treatment with medication alone often leads to serious side effects and dependence.
Both ketamine infusion therapies and rTMS have significant effects in pain management. Migraines often disappear for months. To achieve a lasting effect, we like to combine this treatment with hypnosis and relaxation techniques.
The post traumatic stress disorder arises from events in which unbelievably bad things happen and to which we are helplessly exposed. These events can have a strong and lasting effect on our autonomic nervous system. Sleep disorders, social withdrawal, addictions, depression and increased permanent tension can be the result. The lifetime prevalence of PTSD is reported to be between 5 and 10% of the population, depending on the country. Professions such as soldiers, police officers and medical personnel are particularly affected, but also victims of accidents, rape or patients after intensive medical treatment or resuscitation.
Treatment is carried out with specially developed psychotherapy methods such as EMDR. Recently, the additional treatment with ketamine infusions in combination with relaxation techniques has shown increasing evidence
In the case of single traumatic experiences, a very short treatment is usually sufficient; in the case of multiple, so-called complex traumas, a treatment of more than three weeks may be necessary in individual cases.

Mallorca
Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands, a group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Palma is a port and university city, has a large old town centre with beautiful Art Nouveau buildings. The island of Mallorca is known for long sandy beaches, secluded bays and for all kinds of water sports.
The therapy centre is located in the Clinica Luz, a private hospital in a quiet residential area on the edge of the city forest, in the middle of which rises the Castillo Bellver with a fantastic view of Palma and the bay. This forest invites our patients to go for walks or to do sports with the personal trainers. From here, however, it is only a few minutes to the hotels where most of our patients are accommodated. The harbor and the old town are within easy walking distance.
A large, international, multi-professional team works in our therapy centre. In the clinic we have the possibility to call in doctors of all specialties for conciliar examinations. Patients with severe depression, severely underweight patients or patients who come to us for substance withdrawal can be treated here as inpatients. All modern treatment methods can be used here. Sports therapists, personal trainers, masseurs and physiotherapists, as well as an acupuncturist, complement our range of therapies.
We have exclusively single rooms with an additional visitor’s bed. All rooms and suites have a balcony and a view of the harbor or the forest.
However, most of our patients prefer to stay in one of the nearby hotels and only come to us for treatment.
You can reach Mallorca by direct airline services from nearly all European countries and from the USA. Patients from other countries can fly with one stop via Madrid, Barcelona, Munich or other European airports.
